On May 22, 2023, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Fort Collins Police responded to a report of a burglary at Jax Outdoor Gear, located at 1200 N. College Avenue. The informant stated that the gun counter at the store had been broken into, raising concerns about potential stolen firearms.

Upon the officer’s arrival, there was information to suggest that the suspect was likely still inside the building. Due to the suspect(s) possibly being armed with firearms, the Fort Collins Police SWAT and K9 Teams responded to assist in the search for the suspect(s).

Thomas McMullen, (DOB 01/11/1988), was located inside and successfully apprehended as he exited the building. McMullen was taken into custody without further incident. No other individuals were located inside the building.

McMullen was transported to an area hospital and received medical attention for minor injuries which were self-sustained during the initial burglary. The follow up investigation has revealed that McMullen had caused several thousands of dollars in damage, had accessed multiple firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Jax remained closed for the reminder of the day while the scene was processed.

Subsequently, McMullen was booked into the Larimer County Jail on multiple felony charges. Additional charges are expected to be filed with the Larimer County District Attorney’s Office at a later date.

All charges are merely allegations, and every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with burglaries involving firearms. The swift response and coordinated efforts of Fort Collins Police and their tactical units were crucial in preventing the potential release of several firearms onto the streets. The professionalism and collaborative spirit demonstrated by our officers in handling this dynamic situation are commendable,” said Lieutenant Dan Murphy, who oversees the Fort Collins Police SWAT Team.
