Mexican Chicana alumna and mural artist Brenda Vargas ’22 is unveiling Centro de Educación Aztlán, a meaningful mural to help strengthen the academic identity of UNC’s Hispanic, Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x population. The mural, composed of three panels, will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 4:30 pm., at the west alcove on the main floor of Michener Library. The intention of this mural is to create a community space not only for those who identify themselves as Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x and Hispanic but for everyone who is looking for a space to build an academic identity. The project is possible thanks to an alliance between the artist, the Chicana/o Latinx studies department, Michener Library and UNC’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as part of the university’s efforts to become a Hispanic Serving Institution.

Egresada de UNC devela el mural Centro de Educación Aztlán en la Biblioteca Michener 

La egresada chicana-mexicana y muralista Brenda Vargas '22 develará el mural "Centro de Educación Aztlán", un mural significativo para ayudar a fortalecer la identidad académica de la población hispana, chicana/o/x y latina/o/x de UNC. El mural, compuesto por tres paneles, será presentado este próximo jueves 16 de febrero a las 4:30 p.m., en la alcoba oeste del primer piso de la Biblioteca Michener. La intención de este mural es crear un espacio comunitario no sólo para quienes se identifican como chicana/o/x, latina/o/x e hispana/o, sino para todos aquellos que buscan un espacio para construir una identidad académica. El proyecto es posible gracias a una alianza entre la artista, el Departamento de Estudios Chicana/o Latinx, la Biblioteca Michener y la División de Diversidad, Equidad e Inclusión de la UNC como parte de los esfuerzos de la universidad por convertirse en una Institución al Servicio de los Hispanos (HSI).
