Larimer County issued the following announcement on Dec. 9.
Families participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP] and support programs like Colorado Works, and Old Age Pension in Larimer County can now make online food delivery purchases with their Electronic Benefits Transfer [EBT] card.
The Colorado Department of Human Services [CDHS] launched the program in May 2020 to expand an already-operating pilot program for select SNAP recipients to buy grocery and food items for delivery online.
“As Colorado continues to battle the COVID-19 crisis, safe access to food is more important than ever,” USDA Food and Energy Assistance Director Kara Maraccini said. “These resources help individuals and families access the nutritious food they need to survive while lessening the risk of exposure to COVID.”
Retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Safeway, and Albertsons now offer SNAP EBT online purchases. Contactless, curbside grocery pick-up purchases made with EBT cards are available at King Soopers across the state. Safeway and Albertsons have also launched SNAP EBT for online grocery curbside pick-up through their ‘Drive Up and Go’ service at select stores. Delivery fees, tips, and non-eligible items such as alcohol or tobacco cannot be paid using SNAP benefits.
“The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated issues around access to food and other basic necessities,” said Maraccini. The new option will help some individuals and families access food while supporting social distancing, especially for individuals who are more vulnerable to the health impacts of COVID and will, in the long term, be and option for SNAP participants experiencing barriers to conventional shopping for food.”
