Larimer County Republican Party has expressed concerns over what it describes as Colorado Democrats’ lenient crime policies, claiming these have led to the state becoming the vehicle theft capital of the United States.

According to Larimer County records, a social media post dated January 22, 2026, highlights a vehicle theft rate of 777 thefts per 100,000 residents in 2025. The post attributes this high rate to Democratic policies and mentions legal action by the state attorney general against former President Donald Trump.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation reports a contrasting trend with a 34.5 percent decrease in motor vehicle theft during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This translates to 5,312 fewer vehicles stolen. The state’s per capita auto theft rate has decreased by 63 percent since March 2022 due to insurance reforms that have reduced both theft and fatalities by 9.6 percent while lowering premiums. Uber’s support for these reforms is noted for providing affordable opportunities and bridging economic gaps.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau indicates that nationwide vehicle thefts fell by 23 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, totaling 334,114 thefts. The national average theft rate dropped to 97.33 per 100,000 residents.
