U.S. Census Bureau figures indicate the nation’s older adult population is increasing while the number of children is decreasing. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and above grew by 13%, as the under-18 population declined by 1.7%. The older adult population has surged over the last century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 report finds that nearly 50% of Americans age 65 and older—around 28 million—could need long-term services and supports, and forecasts that more than a third will require nursing home care at some stage.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
